DSelect Finishes Summer Strong

09/16/2010, 9:08am CDT

DSelect travels to Notre Dame and UNC

Dallas Select finished the summer traveling to the University of Notre Dame and the University of North Carolina to competein their team camps. The ND tournament was strictly for rising sophomores or younger, and the UNC tournament was a varsity tournament.

At Notre Dame, Dselect posted an impressive 6-1 record. On the first day, DSelect played Lake Forest, Minnesota Elite, Team Elevation, Eden Prairie, and the Brother Rice Orangemen. In those 5 matches, the squad posted a 4-1 record dropping only its last game to Brother Rice. The tournament took a slight turn into a round robin as thunderstorms forced play to the turf fields.

In Day 2, riding strong individual efforts by Christian Carson-Banister and Tommy McClenehan, Dselect defeated Eden Prairie a second time in a 3-2 comeback effort. The win provided the team with the opportunity to avenge their only tournament blemish. Spotting the Orangemen a 2 goal lead, Dselect then exploded with their own 5 goal run. Two rising freshman, Will Carney and Tommy Addy, lead the way as the entire team “stepped up” its game.

The victory over a fine Brother Rice team, was a great way to end the tournament and provided foundation and excitement for the future Dselect squads.

On the trip to UNC, the squad tallied a 6-3 mark, demonstrating a tremendous amount of grit as they competed against a very talented field and a grinding schedule. The squad played 9 games in the course of 1 night and 2 days and competed exceptionally well.

The battle tested group faced Strake Jesuit (TX), Battlelax, Covenant (VA), Marin (CA), Bones, Seattle Starz, (Beast (FL), St Ignatius (CA), and St. Johns. The team posted a 5-2 record in the initial 7 games dropping two close games to Bones and the Seattle Starz while besting Strake Jesuit, Battlelax, Covenant, and finishing with a most impressive win against Marin.

As 6th seed, Dselect beat a competitive Beast team from Florida. Matched up against St. Ignatius, a perennial CA powerhouse, DSelect lead for much of the first half converting on multiple man up opportunities. They enjoyed a lead through a portion of the 2nd half but ran out of gas to the rested St. Ignatius squad and lost by two goals. St. Ignatius was the eventual tournament champion.

Dan Morris, Hunter Hill, and Max Skibber all represented Dselect in the tournament All-Star game. Dan Morris “stood on his head” impressing the coaches as a rising sophomore goalie. Hunter Hill did his part in locking down his offensive opponents and Max Skibber added an emphatic goal to represent our squad well.

It was a great team and a great way to end the summer season. 5 teams to 5 different tournaments made this a very successful summer for Dallas Select. It saw Dselect draw a tremendous amount of college coaches and left Dselect with quite a matriculation list. We are proud of our rising seniors and are excited for our upcoming grades and the future of our squads. We look forward to seeing you in 2011.
