As #StickStarReport16 comes to a close, the time has come to announce the 2016 Player of the Year. In this, the 6th year of Texas High School lacrosse coverage, we have given this award out to some legendary Texas lacrosse talent. There is little doubt that, in his senior season, Defenseman / Long Stick Midfielder, John Michael Priddy, was a dominant force and a key piece to bringing Jesuit their first ever, Texas High School State Championship.
Early in his career, a decision had to occur - keep John Michael as a dominant midfielder or give him a long stick to neutralize all top-end, opposing talent moving forward? We all know the result. He picked up the long stick and has been affecting the outcomes of games ever since. He is an absolute force on the defensive side of the field but possesses the skill and athleticism to apply pressure on offense, as well.
As a top end, defensive player, you must play with an edge, something John Michael certainly does. He is the kid you want on all of your teams and hate to play against. He is a competitor who won’t give you an inch and someone you don’t really want a piece of. High caliber defensemen aren’t asked to play the role of Mr. Nice Guy; they are trying to stop you from scoring, period. For John Michael, that comes with a certain amount of attitude and a large percentage of physicality. A potent mixture of size, speed, and strength made him an imposing force who drew the top offensive player for every team over the last couple of years. In 2016, he excelled at locking those players down.
Heading off to Michigan in the fall, he has many accomplishments in this Great State as evidenced in his accolades below. We have no doubt that the Wolverines got a great one as he is a player who will add value at the next level!
3x All American - '14, '15, '16 (1 of only 2 Players in Texas History to be a 3x All American);
3x All State - '14, '15, '16;
1x TX ALL STAR;
Three Final Four Appearances;
Two Championship Game Appearances;
One State Championship; and
Defensive MVP of State Championship
Now, a considerable amount of conversation has ensued about why a Jesuit player, John Michael specifically, did not make the cover of the StickStar Report this year. Here is my disclaimer: I asked him for a high quality photo, and he could not get one to me! We had a pixelated picture of a Dallas Jesuit player on the cover in 2015 and decided against doing that again. Ask him about it as the story is true!
John Michael is one hell of a competitor, and we eagerly await to see what he accomplishes moving forward. Congrats to the 2016 StickStar Player of the Year - John Michael Priddy!
Bye, JM, it's been fun.
