StickStar Experience

Coach Kelly's StickStar experience began in Fall of 2014 when Coach Saunders took over the role of head coach at Texas State. He played for Coach Saunders through that season and after the culmination of Nationals and their season was asked to join on and work seminars with StickStar. As a Canadian national, he has been a large part of the growing Texas Box Lacrosse teams that train and travel to different tournaments throughout the year.

1. What is your greatest thrill as a coach?

Seeing players succeed at tasks that they have failed at previously. Specific wins are often thought of when coaches think of their biggest thrills but I can comfortably say its watching players perform and succeed. When players are able to comfortably add skills that they learn in practice successfully into games it means that they trust what they are learning and what you are teaching.

2. What is your greatest thrill as a player?

There are countless memories that have stuck with me but there are probably 2 specific thrills that I remember more frequently. The first would be scoring a pair against the University of Maryland as an undergrad; as a team you watch growing up and all of a sudden you're on the field competing against these guys, its pretty special. The second would be my first goal against UT in the LSA finals with Texas State in 2015. As soon as I caught the ball I went btb knowing it was going to go in and it set the tone for us getting to nationals.

3. What's your favorite piece of StickStar Apparel?

If I get one piece only I have to say our black Texas Box Lacrosse shorts we moved to after our inaugural greens. The next piece would be our navy Jordan brand coaching jackets we got in Year 5 of United, but I'm a shorts guy so it's hard to choose anything else.

4. Why do you enjoy coaching with StickStar?

Everything builds on itself. From the first practice to the last everything gets layered in so you can see how the basics enhance the advanced skills and concepts. Players turn into coaches, whether its older players helping younger players or players matriculating to be on the sidelines. The coaches build on one another, teaching and learning from one another so everyone gets better on the sideline. It's growth in a family setting which you can see in everyone and how much they enjoy being at the field.

5. Favorite Coach?

Gregg Popovich or Steve Kerr.

6. Last song played on iTunes?

Vacation - Derin Falana
