#StickStarReport18: Capital City United 3 Bishop Kelley 1

Heartland Lacrosse League inter-conference action.

Wednesday night in Tulsa, Oklahoma attackman Mason Gayle's 1 goal, 1 assist effort led Capital City United (Oklahoma City) to victory over the Bishop Kelley Comets.

Also contributing for Cap City were Hayden Budde and Luke Bannister with a goal each.

Both teams made use of lengthy offensive possessions, but failed to consistently draw defensive slides from their opponents. While Bishop Kelley showed significant improvement and completed a ton of passes, Cap City's defense was impressive!

In a losing effort, sophomore goalkeeper Remington Hyroop continued his stellar run of play posting 11 saves. Freshman Bo Shentwu added the lone tally for the Comets, isolating his man on the wing and finishing with an impressive near post bounce shot.

The game remained a defensive battle throughout, with the score 1-0 in favor of Cap City at the end of the first quarter.

It appeared Cap City was finding a rhythm offensively but the contest stayed tight as Cap City entered halftime with a 3-0 advantage. Hyroop managed to keep the game close for the Comets, posting a number of tough saves early in the game.

The score remained 3-0 to start the fourth quarter. The lone goal in the second half came late in the fourth quarter from Bishop Kelley's Bo Shentwu. The high bouncer is an awesome shot, and he is not afraid to use it! While Shentwu's goal gave Kelley's sideline life, it was too little, too late for the Comets to make a run.

Step 1 when playing Bishop Kelley: get a 1 slide to Owen Heinecke (21 in white)

Both defenses did a great job in transition, identifying the point man, picking up the ball carrier, and rotating. This caused a number of turnovers as both attack units struggled to complete the necessary passes to convert.

Capital City has impressive size and aggressiveness on defense, and all of their poles can handle the rock. As indicated by the scoreline, both defenses did their part.

The absence of injured Cap City players Jacob Dobbs and Marquette-bound Jake Williams had a clear impact on the game. Their abilities to stretch defenses as initiating dodgers and long-range shooters was sorely missed.

Conversely, Bishop Kelley's offense found it exceedingly difficult to dictate against Cap City's stifling defense. The Comets were not able to successfully attack matchups on short stick defenders when the opportunity was presented.

Ultimately, the two offenses simply could not exploit 1 on 1 matchups and both defenses/goalies played big.
